Please find the ICAS Awardees 2024 below. These Awardees have been carefully selected by the ICAS Honors and Awards Sub-Committee, decided by the ICAS Executive Committee and endorsed by the ICAS Council.
ICAS – Daniel and Florence Guggenheim Award
The Distinguished Lectureship Award is intended to recognise and honour a scientist or engineer of eminence who in a long and productive career has made a significant contribution to progress in aeronautics.
Recipient: Roberto Cingolani
Citation: In recognition of the significant contribution to the progress of the Italian Aeronautical Industry and Technological Research in the field of materials science, nanotechnology, and automation.
ICAS – von Karman Award for International Cooperation in Aeronautics
Its purpose is to acknowledge exceptional achievement in international cooperation in the field of aeronautics, being awarded to a project or programme in which two or more countries are major participants and which is characterised by substantial technical achievement, scientific or technological advance or benefit to society.
Recipient: The Aeroelastic Tailoring Project (handed to Pedro Cabral/ Embraer)
Citation: Through the Aeroelastic Tailoring Project, Embraer and a consortium of top institutions worldwide have made groundbreaking advancements in aeroelasticity and MDO research, fostering international cooperation and driving transformative innovations in aeronautics.
ICAS – Award for Innovation in Aeronautics
Its purpose is to recognize contributions of an individual or a team in effectively integrating a suite of advanced technologies, combined with new design and/or manufacturing processes, to create a new aeronautical system with significant worldwide impact.
Recipient: Helen Webber
Citation: Helen Webber has lead the Team designing, building and running the test of a Helium- cooled precooler to demonstrate the ability to quench the heat from Airflow at Mach 5 equivalent conditions, thereby enabling the viability of air-breathing hypersonic engines for high speed flight and Space Access.
ICAS – Maurice Roy Medal
Its purpose is to honour persons of distinction who have an exceptional record in fostering international cooperation between scientists by their personal participation and involvement in aeronautics.Recipient: Tim Murphy
Citation: For his lifetime contributions to international cooperations in the field of aeronautics through the work with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). Mr Murphy made significant contributions to developments and international standardization for Satelite Navigation applied to civil aviation, and assisted in the development of ICAO’s Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System (GADSS) as well as contributions in many other areas.
ICAS – John J. Green Award
Its purpose is to honour young persons of distinction who are demonstrating an exceptional record in fostering international cooperation between scientists by their personal participation and involvement in aeronautics.
Recipient: Alfonso Pagani
Citation: Alfonso Pagani leads joint research activities with universities and industries to unleash the use of digital twins do design and monitor aircraft structures, composite systems, and 3D printed materials.
ICAS – IFAR Award
The purpose of the ICAS-IFAR Award is to honour an individual who has made a significant contribution to Aeronautical Science within his/her doctoral thesis (PhD or equivalent).
Recipient: Felix Weiss
Citation: In recognition of his exceptional research and significant contribution to aeronautical sciences through the PhD Thesis “Drivetrain Influence on the Lead-Lag Motion of Helicopter Rotors”.
ICAS – John McCarthy Student Awards
The Award or Awards, consisting of a certificate and a stipend, will be given to the author (or authors, should there be more than one who satisfies the qualifying criteria) of the paper the quality of content and presentation of which is judged to be the best or second best of those presented at the Congress.Recipients: to be announced in the evening at the Congress Banquet (September 2024)
ICAS Award for Distinguished Service to ICAS
To honour an individual who has made a significant contribution or provided an exceptional service that helped to advance the vision and goals of ICAS. This contribution or service should be provided as a member of the ICAS organisation including Committees or Subcommittees, the Council, and the local Congress organising committee. The recipient of this Award could receive this award more than one time. For the first time in ICAS history we decorate this many persons with the ICAS Award for Distinguished Service to ICAS in 2024.
Recipients: Kenichi Rinoie, Japan
Citation: Professor Kenichi Rinoie is hereby recognized for his leadership, dedication and highly successful organisation of the 2023 ICAS Emerging Technology Forum and Programme Committee meeting in Kyoto. His notable achievement in bringing together senior representatives of Japan’s aerospace industry to meet with the ICAS officers was particularly appreciated.
Recipients: Anders Blom, Sweden
Citation: Anders Blom is being recognized for outstanding leadership in the organization of the 33rd Congress of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden, providing a memorable event to the worldwide aeronautical community for the return to in-person ICAS gatherings.
Recipients: Anders Gustafsson, Sweden
Citation: Anders Gustafsson is being recognized for outstanding dedication in the preparation and execution of the 33rd Congress of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden, which has provided for an extraordinary opportunity for the ICAS community to return to in-person events and for a very successful ICAS congress.
Recipients: Sebastien Remy, France
Citation: Sebastien Remy is being recognized for his outstanding contributions and leadership, and his consistent and wise advisement throughout his tenure in the ICAS Executive Committee, proving to be a beacon of light as ICAS endeavored to find the best course forward through some challenging times.
ICAS Honorary Fellows
The ICAS Council may grant the status of “Honorary Fellow” to individuals who in the opinion of the Council have distinguished themselves by virtue of their exceptional personal contributions, or through exceptional service to the objectives of ICAS.
Recipients: Joao Azevedo, Brazil
